‘Believing is Achieving’

Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

Equality and Diversity statement for website

At The Shepwell School, we value and celebrate our diverse community of staff and learners.  We strive each day to promote kindness, tolerance, resilience and understanding so that all members of the school can enjoy and embrace all of their learning opportunities without barriers.

Our aims are:

  • To forge strong relationships between the school, parents and community, which fosters respect, honesty, co-operation and tolerance
  • To help our pupils to understand the world around them and respect the values of others
  • To ensure that every member of our school community feels included, whatever their needs and capabilities
  • To recognise and celebrate the individuality of all of our pupils and respond appropriately to their needs

Equality is about fairness and equality of opportunity. This often involves treating people differently.  People should not always be treated the same.  Some people may need extra help or adjustments to be part of the school community; this includes teachers, administration, cleaning or catering staff employed at the school as well as pupils/students, parents and school governors.

Relating to the Equality Act (2010) there are nine ‘protected characteristics’ these are;

  • Age
  • Disability
  • Gender reassignment (transgender)
  • Marriage / civil partnership
  • Pregnancy / maternity
  • Race
  • Religion and belief (and having no belief)
  • Sex (gender)
  • Sexual orientation.

All members of the school community, governors, staff, pupils, parents and visitors all have a part to play in implementing this policy, promoting diversity and equality, challenging inappropriate behaviour or practice to remove barriers and avoiding discrimination.

At Shepwell, we have a range of activities, themed days, assemblies and competitions based around the theme of diversity that happen throughout the year.  Should you have any questions, please contact Miss Walker for further information.
