At Shepwell School, all staff and pupils are in one of the following houses: Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune and Earth. The pupils voted for these names themselves to promote them to have ownership over them. House assemblies are held during Thursday form time and our staff captains rally the troops preparing them for the next inter-house competition.

So far, we have had great fun competing in a tug of war, chess tornament, numerous PE and games events and even a whole school nerf gun battle! Both pupils and staff really enjoy the friendly competition!

We also give pupils the chance to take part in subject specific competitions to promote fun within their learning and ensuring maximum investment from our pupils. The pupils (and staff) have enjoyed making humorous house posters -as well as sabotaging other houses!

Prizes for winning houses have included McDonald’s, snacks and time off timetable; time on the gaming (reading!) bus, non-uniform days and even a bowling trip. The bowling trip has been a larger reward as part of our drive to increase attendance. At the end of the academic year, we will have a larger prize for the House with the most points!

Whilst competitive, our pupils have also helped the local community within their house competitions. House assembly time has been used to create posters for charities and campaigns, sending birthday cards to the areas oldest person and various collections for good causes. We would like to thank the families of our pupils for donating items towards these when they feel they have been able to.

Our House system has helped to create a sense of community to our many neuro-divergent pupils. It encourages teamwork, resilience, empathy and investment in school life which they may not have felt before.

At Shepwell, we believe that we should prepare our pupils for the ‘real-world’. By encouraging friendly rivalry, exposing them to victory and defeat and forming a community, we support their independence and emotional growth and have FUN in the process!
